Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, an American musician and rapper. Her work as Queen Latifah in television, film as well as music has earned her several prizes. They include a Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Six additional Grammy Nominations An Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was born in and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita a schoolteacher who worked for Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Sr. an officer in the police force. Latifah's parents divorced at the age of 10 years old. Latifah went to Catholic school, and she was educated at Newark New Jersey. She went to in the Baptist church. Latifah is an Arabic word that means "delicate and kind". Her cousin granted it to her in the age of eight. Latifah is a tall, 5'10" girl who was in the basketball team of her high school team. In a school production, she performed the song Home from The Wiz. Latifah started to beatbox for the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah joined the original Flavor Unit group, made up of a variety of MCs, as well as the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King, recorded an unreleased version of Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He then gave it to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah following her hearing of the song. She released her first single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
