Whitney Elizabeth Houston is the youngest of four children born in Newark, the state of New Jersey, on August 9 1993. Her parents are gospel vocalists Cissy Houston, aka Emily Lee Drinkard - and John Russell Houston Jr. Whitney's cousin Dionne Warwick was also an international singer. Her first singing gig was in the choir of the church she attended The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark when she was a child and by the age of 15, she had begun singing backing vocals professionally alongside the mother of her on Chaka Khan's hit song from 1978 Im Every Woman. The album Whitney was released in 1987 and featuring hit tracks What Do Broken Hearts go? and I Wanna Dance With Somebody, was a follow-up to her success from.
